Introduction to Specialty Practice: Perioperative Nursing (92341)
Assessment 2 Topics:
Choose ONE of the following topics and answer the associated questions in relation to weeks 1-4 of the patient case scenario (found in the lab preparation folders for labs 1-4). This assessment is to be written in report form. There should be a small introduction and conclusion. However you may use headings to guide the reader through the major points of discussion. All discussion needs to be based on current literature and it is expected that at least 8-10 references are used. In-text referencing is essential and the use of point form will not be accepted.
Topic 1: The surgical count(leaving surgical utensils inside a patient)
- In relation to current literature, define theadverse event of the inadvertently retained surgical item/instrument and explain what affect this can have on the patient.
- Explain in general why this adverse event occurs and then decide whether you feel Dr McGrath is at risk.
- What procedures/policies must the surgical team follow in order to prevent this adverse event from happening? Explain in detail, with rationales the evidence based practice they should be employing during Dr McGrath’s surgery.
Topic 2: Correct site surgery (performing on the correct body part)
- In relation to current literature, define the adverse event of wrong patient, wrong site or wrong side surgery and explain what affect this can have on the patient.
- Explain in general why this adverse event occurs and then decide whether you feel Dr McGrath is at risk.
- What procedures/policies must the surgical/anaesthetic team follow in order to prevent this adverse event from happening? Explain in detail, with rationales the evidence based practice they should be employing whilst Dr McGrath is in the operating theatre department.
Topic 3: Maintaining Asepsis(infection inside patient after surgery??)
- In relation to current literature, define the adverse event of surgical site infection and explain what affect this can have on the patient.
- Explain in general why this adverse event occurs and then decide whether you feel Dr McGrath is at risk.
- What procedures/policies must the surgical team follow in order to prevent this adverse event from happening? Explain in detail, with rationales the evidence based practice they should be employing during Dr McGrath’s surgery.
