Request approval to attend a course
Dear Ms. Elaine Shoemaker,
RE: Approval to Attend Course
I request your technical and financial approval to attend a one week course on ‘Managing a Technical Environment’ at the McGill University, Montreal, schedule to run from Monday 5th to Friday 9th of next month. The maximum immersion course will be held from 9am to 5pm daily, with an additional session from 7 pm to 10 pm on Wednesday evening. The total cost of the course is set at $695, inclusive of materials, books, and lunches, and a guest speaker from industry at every lunch break. The course will have a total of 16 participants, who are required to confirm their participation through registration no later than noon on the 23rd of this month via the university’s website or telephone.
The McGill ‘Managing a Technical Environment’ course is invaluable for scientists, engineers, and other technical professionals taking on new or additional managerial responsibilities because it is tailored for their professional development. Undertaking the course will furnish me with fundamental tools for effective supervision of the other technical professional under my responsibility. The program will also help me substantially sharpen and build leadership skills in addition to gain significant insight into human behavior. This is especially the case the course is designed to begin with basic concepts of management after which each concept will be applied to unique technical environment.
I am also highly confident that attending the course will provide me with a rare special opportunity of interacting and exchange ideas and knowledge with other participants which will in turn stimulate fresh thinking on my part. This chance to network with other professionals will enable me to expand my own perspective, enrich my ability to solve problems, and considerably extend my ability to lead. McGill University has also committed to make the ‘Managing a Technological Environment’ course more focused on practicality and results than on the theoretical aspects of it. As such, the program will make effective use of discussion, simulation, exercises, role-plays as well as cases drawn from real-life technical firms.
It is my humble request that the company sponsors my attendance to the upcoming McGill program by taking care of tuition fee, travel and lodging. Accommodation is single-occupancy rooms at a nearby Montreal hotel. I can use a rental car for the IPT project to drive to Montreal if a fee of $34.95 per day is added to my expenses to reimburse IPT. I seek to be excused from the Inter-Provincial Telephones (IPT) program so that I can attend the 5-day McGill program. Considering that we are well ahead of schedule by three days and its due on 12th of this month, the project can briefly remain under the able hands of my two partner technicians, Ted McCourt and Carolyn Freedman. Last winter I did not have the privilege of attending a similar extension department evening course by my local university in which this company sponsored four engineers to attend at a fee of $365 each.
In light of the fact that we are short of time, your swift consideration and response to my request will be most appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Head of Inter-Provincial Telephones (IPT).
