Reflective Writing
I have learned and improved several new research skills. Though I had prior knowledge regarding some basic research skills, I was able to benefit from learning some completely new skills. To start with, I learned how to effectively narrow my options to one particular choice when selecting a research topic. Through the decision-making process I was able to learn how to both brainstorm and prioritize my choices. A scheduling exercise helped me gain skills on how to allot my time so as to complete the given research task in time. The writing and research assignment enabled me to gain relatively more in-depth knowledge of the subject matter as compared to what I would have gained from listening to an instructor in class (Kathpalia & Heah, 2008). As such, I have grown as a writer by gaining knowledge on setting priorities, dealing with setbacks, and allowing for other commitments.
As I begun the process of gathering information and data, I increased my research skills incrementally. This was especially the case because I found myself searching for information from quarters that I initially never knew the even existed. It was therefore for me to learn new possibilities for methods and places to undertake research such a magazines, newspapers, radio, movies and museums. It helped me to realize where precisely to find whatever information or data I needed at a library as well when to seek the help of the librarian. In addition, I learned how to gauge the integrity of my sources and dismiss those that were incorrect and/or misleading. It was particularly satisfying to become adept at taking relevant notes from the various sources of information and then rewriting them in my own words.
At the end of the data/information gathering process, I learned how to cite my sources in proper manner in different referencing styles. Indeed, I found referencing the easiest part of the assignment, although I pay attention to not make mistakes and avoid plagiarism. In this regard, I am now able to organize all my information and create a logical procedure for presenting it. In fact, it was interesting to realize that I had the freedom to add in my own analysis of the collected data or my own argument to reinforce my opinion of the information. As it is, I am able to turn all of this into a logical organized paper that consists of an introduction section, the body, and conclusion. In the end, I learned the importance of fact checking, proofreading, and effective editing of my research work before submitting or publishing.
The research writing skills that I have acquired throughout this year will not only come in handy for me in doing research papers, but also in other schoolwork and future jobs or careers. It is evident that almost all other subjects of study require effective writing and research skills (Kathpalia & Heah, 2008).
Going forth, I have identified various courses of actions to help me effectively address my weakness and improve my strengths even further. I portend to set aside time and a study place, free of any distractions, so as to improve both my research and writing skills as an individual. My greatest challenge is paying attention to detail for long, and thus I will make sure to highlight with bright colors the most critical information and data to my future study topics.
