1. Reflecting on your ‘initial response’ concerning the idea of responsible business “ATTACHED WITH THE FILES” as outlined in your tutorial submission in week 3 tutorial, research the case of General Motors (GM)’s product recall due to the failure of the ignition switch (refer http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/03/business/in-general-motors-recalls-inaction-and-trail-of-fatal-crashes.html or the pdf document attached. You are expected to research and integrate other relevant material in the development of your essay.
2. Write an essay of 2000 word answeringthe following questions in relation to the case study of GM.
• What did GM do?
• How did GM do it?
• How do you feel after reading the case?
• In which other occasions have your felt like this?
• If you were the CEO of GM, what would you have done differently?
• How can GM explain what happened?
• What are the implications for GM for similar situations?
• What are the effects of differences generated by GM’s practice?
• When and what differed from the expected?
3. Essay sections:
Your reflective essay must have the following sections.
1. A brief description of Week 3 tutorial submission
2. Answers to case study questions above
3. Your understanding of Utilitarianism
4. Application of Utilitarianism to case study
5. Using the contents of 1-4 above, a critical reflection on your values framework.
4. To encourage reflexivity, the assessment requirements are not too prescriptive in the required structure of the essay. For example, you can position the week 3 submission details at the beginning in one chunk, or let it be interwoven into the essay. You can use utilitarianism anywhere in the essay, same with integrating your values and answering the 9 GM questions.
5. The 9 GM questions are meant to trigger your critical thinking and make you identify your assumptions, attitudes, values and beliefs more easily. Your answers to these questions shouldn’t be the only focus of your essay. Refer to the marking sheet posted on Moodle.
6. Use your week 3 submission as the basis to develop your reflective story using the GM case study. The GM case study is the vehicle, the scene, and the ethical issue that you should apply your values to. Ultimately you need to be reflective about yourself, integrating your values in a reflective story.
7. Use Utilitarian theory to justify your claims.
