Business organizations, non-profit organizations, universities, technical schools, high schools and even elementary schools are tapped into e-learning. Learning objectives range from soft skills enhancement, to technical and procedural knowledge, to academic achievement and certification. There are many factors that support e-learning as a training medium; but, like everything else there are trade-offs and limitations.
One important advantage of e-learning for companies is that programs can be designed to directly support specific business objectives and strategies. Moreover, these programs can be designed, deployed and updated quickly to a diverse audience that can include employees, partners, suppliers, vendors and customer. This creates a rich environment for sharing and improving processes. Companies also benefit from reduced administration costs as registration, completion rates, pre and post-test results can be automatically captured at login. The high cost of program planning is offset by savings in travel accounts, training venues, instructors, as well as, room and board.
From the trainee standpoint e-learning lends the flexibility of scheduling training at times of convenience since training can occur anytime and anywhere the internet is accessible. Learners have increased access to peers, experts, vendors and customers expanding the content and learning capabilities. Learning is enhanced due to the engagement of different learning styles. Programs can utilize text, sound, videos, role plays / interaction and graphics.
However, e-learning does present challenges. First and foremost students must be internet capable and accessible. There still exists a digital divide that precludes access by some. Furthermore, the cost of e-learning is very high. Also as with other training mediums it is difficult to show direct line return on investment; therefore management buy-in is difficult for such a pricey venture. Finally, it may be difficult for some students to discipline themselves to take the classes creating stressful, unproductive cram sessions that interfere with learning.
