Review of PICO Article

Review of PICO Article

The article under consideration for review is Evidence-Based Practice, Step by Step: Asking the Clinical Question: A Key Step in Evidence-Based Practice by Stillwell, Fineout-Overholt, Melnyk & Williamson (2010). The article was published in the Volume 110, Issue 3 of American Journal of Nursing.
During the review of the article, it was observed that the authors have chosen to substantiate their assertions through the frequent presentation of examples. These examples have helped authors place their inferences in a practical perspective; which can be expected to have a positive impact on the readership group that constitutes students and new-entrants in the field. In the same vein, it appears that the authors have given an equally significant degree of consideration to the needs of students and other freshmen readers (Stillwell, Fineout-Overholt, Melnyk, & Williamson, 2010).
The article appears to have been written after an extensive and thorough research an investigation process (Stillwell, Fineout-Overholt, Melnyk, & Williamson, 2010). This can be evidenced from the fact that the authors have not only chosen to cover multiple viewpoints but have gone so far as to make it a series of publications based on a particular area. This makes it a highly dynamic and on-going effort that demands commendation and acknowledgment.
The article takes a direct approach to the exploration of EBP and gives consideration to the finer details of the intricacies highlighted. It was observed that the authors are highly motivated towards the subject of their research (Stillwell, Fineout-Overholt, Melnyk, & Williamson, 2010). The authors choose to take inspiration from real-world cases; the likes of which one would expect to find in a regular scenario where new and old employees run into unfamiliar circumstances from time to time.
The text is highly descriptive and does not take the readers’ understanding of the subject area for granted. This was observed through the fact that the authors have broken down their recommendations into reader friendly steps that can be followed. This can be evidenced through an observation of the degree of detail to which the authors have chosen to narrate incidents of relevance. The descriptions are highly specific and state all necessary parameters that may be of relevance to health care practitioners looking to generate a better understanding of the principles of EBP.
PICO Statement

The question developed pertains to premature infants. The question seeks to determine an understanding of the fundamentals that come into play when the infant is born prematurely and the degree to which the infant can be expected to develop sensory deafness during his/her lifetime (Gerrish & Lacey, 2010). The question covers all four of the requirements put for by the PICO framework for question development. The question developed for the purpose of this paper is: In infants born prematurely, compared to those born at full term, what is the subsequent lifetime prevalence of sensory deafness?
The population/patients considered in the question are infants while the intervention/indicator limits them to those who were born prematurely. The comparator/control group for the question constitutes infants who have been born with full-term. The outcome considered for the purpose of this is the health condition of sensorial deafness.
There are numerous clinical problems that can be observed in this regard. However, most of these clinical problems pertain to the immediate post-birth treatment given to the child (Glasziou, Mar, & Salisbury, 2009). The treatment given to the child in the short run (soon after birth) can be expected to have a significant influence on the manner in which the child’s faculties develop with the passage of time.
