When I first saw the title of the article I was sure that the “unethical” would not apply to me. To my surprise I learned a lot from that article and found myself agreeing with some of the points made. I see some of the characteristic of me within 2 of the four related sources of unintentional unethical decision making.
For the starters Implicit Prejudice could describe some of the way I view and unconsciously associate certain things automatically. It is true, that certain associations make it easier to organize our world, regardless we must step away from that thought process and use better judgment.
The second source that caught my attention is in group favoritism. I never thought there was in issue with doing favors for those I know. I believed it is easier to help those we are close to, because they confide in us and we know and understand their needs. Being from another country, I have always find it easier to associate with others with the same background, who spoke the same language as I. I am bias to the food and the culture. I justified it with being comfortable and it being a normal feeling. I think it is very difficult for someone to be totally unbiased without always checking their decisions and using some of the counteract biases points that the article mentioned to as a tool. Gathering better data, broaden ones mind-set when making decision. I found the part about pretending not to know which group one belongs to when making decision that affect others as a great guideline to help us remain fair.
