Role Played by COINTELPRO in Political Subversion
Most nations including America practice democracy. The ideology behind this issue is to enhance human rights, social protection and security (Wolf, 2001para.1). However, the nature of this democracy is questionable. Reason being, some governments officials undertake illegal activities to shun down some activists who may reveal secrets involved by the immoral leaders. This is where Counter Intelligence Program (Cointelpro), an official FBI team works hard with the aim to reveal the immoral acts imposed on some activists. The documentary features all the evil doing experienced by these activists and help in coming up with solutions to save the future generation.
Cointelpro 101 has actually worked hard to reveal immoral situations. This documentary has played a role in the political subversion of civil rights movement and the struggle for human rights in the cold war era especially of the American history. In 1950, Martin Luther King was being monitored by the FBI to investigate his involvement with the communists, as it was believed initially (Martin Luther King, Jr., n.d., para. 1). However, there was no evidence, through the FBI surveillance to prove his involvement with the immoral acts of the communities. Before Martin Luther King Jr. became president, Franklin Roosevelt, once initiated a research to determine the political subversive that had befallen the country. That is when the FBI was granted the opportunity to investigate matters concerning national security. When Hoover, was investigating matters on political subversion of civil rights during Martin Luther’s reign, it was discovered that Martin Luther’s advisor was a secret member of the subversion (Martin Luther King, Jr., n.d., para. 1). Resources try to prove that, the FBI was using this platform to accuse moral leaders as the FBI itself played a significant role in enhancing political Subversion. For example, The FBI was against the ways of martin king Luther and wanted to frame him for mistakes he never did. When Hoover, asked his team to o and search for subversive material in the King house, it seems like everything was a plot to make the king look responsible for all killings that were happening during that era. He did this to make sure that Martin King Luther never got support from the Church, mass media or other financial supporter .This is clear evidence that the FBI were also politically subversive and wanted to take control of the state duties. Another evidence to portray the involvement of Cointelpro in enhancing political subversion of human rights was during Martin King Luther’s assassination. When FBI was investing about Black Nationalist–Hate Groups through cointelpro, they believed that the king was in danger and a target; however, it seemed that the FBI was resist and never wanted the unification of black nationalists in America. This might have led to his assassination that left many questions unanswered.
These few samples that involve Martin King Luther Jr. and the FBI through its cointelpro process, have managed to give a clear picture on how cointelpro might have played a role in political subversion of human rights and civil rights. The death of Martin Luther is still a mystery, yet the FBI is carrying out investigations to determine his death. On the contrary, Hoover might have planned everything to make sure that the Black Nationalist does not attain their rights as American citizen. Therefore, to prove the FBI wrong a neutral investigation team should be engaged in investigating the FBI and find the whole truth.
