Technical Writing 10
Activity 15.
Read the following memorandum from a supervisor to his staff. As you read assume that you are a member of the staff. Put d down your reactions to the memos then answer the following questions.
My overall reaction and the reason
I would opt to change my manners in the organization if I happen to be in any of the enlisted problems. I would opt to change due to the inclinations by the memo specifications to prevent further notifications with such memos. During my work in the organization, I would avoid such memos because the supervisor who wrote it advocate for courtesy yet in the memo, the supervisor does not seem to embrace courtesy. The supervisor uses the language that lacks diplomacy and the sentiments are inclined towards one direction tat does not accommodate the views of all workers.
My reactions to phrases
I consider the phrase “your mamas did’nt teach you” an insult. In my perception good mannerisms are always imparted in a child by the mother. The supervisor means that the staff members were not inducted at all during their childhood and do not possess good behavior. I would then object this phrase because it’s only the supervisor who believes to be possessing good personality. The supervisor confirms the lack of rationality in him by mentioning that the staff never obtained good manners even the time when they were closely monitored by the parents of which is referred to as checkered past.
Other objectionable phrases
“As you are casually staggering down the hallways…”
“I find peoples watches so cheap that they can gain ten minutes in one day”
“Tours can be arranged if you are still having difficulty with this concept”.
The three phrases above are objectionable because the first one refers to the staff as walking on the ways staggering. This is an evident despise from the supervisor. The supervisor should take note that it might be due to the load carried by an individual in the site might not allow the individual to walk in the right position. The second phrase is objectionable because the language used treats the costs of the watches with their efficiency. The supervisor also states that tours can be organized only to train the staff on the simple concept to mean that the staffs don’t easily understand even the simplest instructions.
Rewrite the introduction
This piece intends to provide highlights of some crucial points you need to consider since it seems you either forgot or you were never taught by your mothers. Majority of these polite stimulations in line with the reputable practice affect all and should therefore be implemented. There are some that are not applicable for our use especially to the subcontractors. Nevertheless, I recommend that everyone takes keen notice to study the contents of this list, understand and strategize on how to comply with the specifications.
A rewrite of the fourth paragraph
To all smokers: take note that I am disgusted of picking your cigarette buts everywhere in the parking lot. There are ash trays mounted besides every each of the four main doors to these offices. He calls for the utilization of these trays by you and consider depositing your cigarette remains on the trays. Avoid getting outside the premises consuming the cigarettes and throwing the butts on the ground before passing the trays and entering. Let us embrace good practices that accommodate all aspects of courtesy within the work place.
Rewrite the closing
We need to more than common; there is a necessity in us exhibiting more common sense and civility instead of exhibiting ordinarily. Consider the other people who operate in this place and manifest respect in them and their belongings since the current practices exhibit little manners. The enlisted issues provided are just but highlights, we need to embrace ethics since we merit and can operate as rational adults.
