Below are the dissertation introduction and the UAE context chapters:
1. The UAE Context
1.1. Introduction
The Arabian Gulf area was under the protection of Britain during the period (1820-1971)(Onley, 2009). In 1968 Britain announced that they would leave the gulf (The UAE – History, 2015). Therefore, the rulers of the Gulf States namely Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the Trucial States (known later as United Arab Emirates) and occasionally Muscat foresaw a threat coming as they often lacked the self-defense resources without outsiders help(Onley, 2009). As a result to that announcement, the late Sheikh Zayedbin Sultan Al Nahyan(1918-2004), the founder of the UAE, acted immediately and called with Sheikh Rashedbin Saeed Al Maktoum (1912-1990), ruler or Dubai at that time, for federation that include the seven Emirates and the federation to be known as the United Arab Emirates was formally established on 2nd December 1971(The UAE – History, 2015).
This chapter provides a brief background about the UAE context especially. The information presented in this chapter shall assist the reader understand about the UAE, its economy and the technology development background.
1.1.1. Location
The UAE is located in the southwest corner of Asia in the Middle East region at the tip of Arabian Peninsula. It borders Qatar from the northwest, Saudi Arabia from the west, south and southeast, and Oman from southeast and northeast(Where is the UAE?, 2015). It overlooks the Arabian Gulf to the north and Gulf of Oman to the east(UAE Information, 2015).
The UAE has a strategic important location as it is located on the newSouthern Silk Road between Asia, Europe and Africa, which provides excellent trading conditions that would promote the UAE to take advantage of economic activities amongthe world’s fastest growing and developing economies which makes the UAE as a global hub for traders(A Global Hub, 2015). Moreover, overlooking both the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman has granted the UAE the opportunity to avoid exporting oil through Hormuz strait which Iran has threatened to block. In July 2012, UAE started exporting oil from Fujairah after building a bypassing pipeline stretching from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman(Dipaola & Daya, 2012).

1.1.2. Religion
The constitution declares that Islam is the official religion of the UAE and ensures that non-Muslim religious groups safely practicetheir religious activities(UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, 2015). In 2010, estimated 89% of the total population (8,264,070) are non-citizens(Methodology of estimating the population in UAE, 2011). All citizens are Muslims and the government forbids extremist tendencies or ideologies. In schools, Islamic studies are mandatory in public schools and in private schools serving Muslim students(UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, 2015).
