Using relevant course materials and concepts, historicize and localize (as in, looking at how these themes operate at Miami University) the following three themes of American Born Chinese:
The burden of stereotypes (yellow peril, model minority myth)
The desire to transform/assimilate
The challenges of self-acceptance, cross-cultural understanding, and community-building
In addressing the third theme, suggest one concrete idea for either alleviating anti-Asian sentiment at Miami, or improves the experience for international Asian and/or Asian American students at Miami. It could be something that you can do personally, and/or it could be an idea for a program or organization that doesn’t exist (whether in the division for student affairs, international student resources, in Miami’s curricular offerings and organization, etc), and/or it could be an improvement to an already-existing program or organization. Be creative, specific, and thoughtful.
