The aim of the term paper is to discuss one or more theoretical approaches by applying it/them to an element of International Political Economy discussed in this course. The theoretical approaches can be realism, liberalism, constructivism, historical-materialism or Marxism, feminism, etc. The element of International Political Economy could be the developments in a certain policy-area (e.g. international monetary issues, trade, finance
). You could choose to compare different approaches to see if they explain better certain developments.
It needs to be structured in chapters (or sections), i.e. introduction, various chapters of background and analysis, conclusion, and an alphabetical list of the literature you read. As for the text itself, literal citations should be placed between inverted comma’s with the full source in a footnote1 or in the text between brackets if you are using the Harvard system (e.g. Strange, 1998: 12)). Avoid excessive use of citations, but use your own words. However, if you are drawing heavily on a certain source, even when using your own words, you need to refer to the source again in a footnote or between brackets (if you are using the Harvard system). You are free to choose your system of reference, but be consistent. I also encourage you to go through a number of issues of academic journals, for example, International Organization; International Studies Quarterly; Review of International Political Economy; or World Politics.Other sources If your topic is very timely, in addition to academic sources, you may need to consult quality news media (the Financial Times, or The Economist).
