Answer the following questions using textbook “The Enjoyment of Music” 10th ed. (Forney & Machlis) as the reference.
1. Mozart: Eine Kleine Nacht Musik K. 525 1st and 3rd movementt
You know the opening of this piece from various cartoons. Please discuss the differences between the 1st and 3rd movements. Include texture, instrumentation, intensity. Also, the 1st movement is in Sonata form. What does that mean to you? Did Mozart follow that defined form? Or did he break rules in this piece? Explain your answer.
2. Haydn: Symphony No. 94 in G Major – 2nd Mvt
This is named the Surprise symphony. Why?
3. Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor – 1st movement
One of Beethoven’s most famous works. He used a 4 note theme and created an entire work. What other composers have followed this idea? Can you think of a modern day music composer who has become famous due to some three-four note themes? What is he known for? In what ways did Beethoven stray from the typical Sonata format (as defined in your book) in this piece?
4. Mozart Piano concerto in G major K. 453 1st mvt.
The concerto is defined as a type of a fight. One instrument versus a group of instruments push and pull of sorts. Describe the fight used here. This is also a Sonata form. Did Mozart break the rules in this one? What is the primary difference between this piece and Eine Kleine Nacht Musik listed above? (The difference in a symphony and a concerto is what I am looking for here)
5. Beethoven: Moonlight Sonata 1st and 2nd mvt.
What instrument(s) is/are used in this piece? In what ways are the two movements alike? In what ways are they different?
6. Schubert: Erlking
What does the repeated notes in the piano represent? One voice plays 4 characters in this piece. What are those four characters? What differentiates between the four characters? How do you know when the soloist has changed the character?
