Utilizing Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique and her descriptions of women’s lives in middle class suburbs, in what ways do women still experience “the forfeited experience?” Using examples and/or concepts/conceptual frameworks from our Hunter College text, in what ways were women of color and women of lower class and working class statuses not included in Friedan’s discussions of the modern female experiences? How did this fracturing of the women’s movement affect the work and goals of the feminist movement? By Friedan’s treatment, or non-inclusion, of women of color, and women belonging to the lower economic classes, ten what message was sent to these women about their places in the women’s movement and in society-at-large? How was Friedan’s treatment of these groups mirroring the mainstream society-at-large? How does this message about non-inclusion continue today through the educational system? And related to the subject of messages about status based upon skin color and gender, would Don Imus have made similar racial and sexual slurs about an all-white women’s basketball team as he did about the Rutgers’ Scarlet Knights?

Near the end of your paper I would like you to give me some Personal Reflection, do you feel that any gender barriers keep you from achieving your full potential? Some of you may answer yes, others may answer no. But I want you to answer this question. If you answer no, I am able to reach my full potential without any gender bias or being discriminated against, then give me examples of ways in which you are able to fulfill your goals. On the other hand, if you answer yes, I do or have suffered from bias or discrimination on the basis of my gender, then please give examples that depict goal achievement that is blocked because of gender-related issues.
Answer the questions and elaborate on the issues using The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan.
