The Fleeting World

*For some of you this will be information you already know, however, please look for terms or approaches that might be new to you. For many of you this will be new information. For class today you will have with you, IN WRITING, 5 terms from the reading that you believe to be very important for understanding World History. (Out-of-class) Short Writing Assignment #1 Due Today: 5 terms from the reading that you believe to be very important for understanding World History Name each term (or phrase), explain what it means in your own words, (DO NOT MERELY QUOTE A DEFINITION FROM THE BOOK, or change a few words from a quote and call it your own definition) and explain why it is very important for understanding World History. (YOUR OWN ASSESSMENT – NOT ONE FROM THE BOOK). You will, of course, use material from the reading to support your argument. Roughly 150-200 words per term. This exercise will help you focus your reading and think about the reading in analytical terms, rather than reading for “facts”. It will also give you some basic practice in making a claim (or argument, or thesis – which is what we do in History), and supporting that claim with evidence (we always use evidence to support our claims in the field of History). I WILL call on you in class, so you should be prepared to explain your terms. You can hand-write or type up this assignment, but it must be a hard copy that you bring to class. You will not turn in this assignment on sakai, but turn in a hard copy in class today. GRADING: This assignment will be graded as part of your short reading responses grade. The grade will be based on the relevancy of your terms/phrases, your definitions, and your explanations. You must use complete sentences; have no typos; and show the page # of your evidence after the sentences where it appears. (59)
