present a number of interconnected issues with regard to the application of science through the genetic modification of plants. These include concerns about diversity, genetic and other, industry concentration, environmental effects, food safety, etc. Specifically, the film addresses the question of patenting naturally growing food products. U.S. patent law serves to protect the investment that companies, or individuals, make in developing a new product. With the patent, the company, or individual, solely reaps the benefits from the sale of said product. When a company expends money on research and development of a new seed, by new here we mean one with new genetic characteristics; for example, a herbicide introduced into a plant’s genetic code, current patent law confers ownership to use that seed for growing a crop to that company. Farmers and other users cannot withhold the seed and use it for the next season’s crop. In addition, the courts have ruled that the natural dispersion of the seed via the wind, for example, gives rights to the associated crop to the company owning the original seed.
Should we continue to allow companies to claim ownership over plant and animal genes? Make an argument for or against this law. Who should own the crop (seed) and why? Relevant things to consider: The Company expenditures on research and development. The benefits the farmer receives from planting the seed. Environmental or diversity issues.
