This must be a study of an area, defined not by conventional boundaries (countries, states,
provinces, etc.) but by broader cultural commonalities, consistent with the practice of area studies. The paper can (and should) discuss all aspects of the place ― language,
religion, material culture, economics, politics, natural features, climate, and the like. The project should make
use of the relevant facts from the readings and lectures, but it must also use at least eight outside sources, at
least three of which must be peer-reviewed. Assuming that the basic requirements are met, the grade will
reflect both the understanding of the course material, and the quality of the research and the writing.
