The role of warehousing operations in effective Supply Chain Management

“Warehouses should aim to provide value adding services as well as minimising operating costs” Mangan et al 2012

Warehouses are not simply buildings filled with stock. They do offer a supply chain manager a range of processes that can add value to the products that flow through them. Creating bulk consignments, breaking bulk consignments, combining goods, smoothing supply to meet demand and postponement are common operations performed within a warehouse. Additionally, reverse logistics operations are opportunities for adding value too. This shows how dynamic the management of a warehouse needs to be.

The purpose of this assignment is to explore the range of possible services that warehouse management can offer supply chain managers.

1. Discuss the role IT and RFID plays in the warehouse.
