The Trial of Socrates

In Plato’s Apology of Socrates, Socrates might seem to provide two somewhat opposed and even contradictory accounts of his life: The Delphic Oracle story and the story in which he associates himself with Achilles and the god and calls himself a gadfly. Analyze the way these two accounts seem to be in tension. Decide on the basis of the preponderance of the evidence or the most essential evidence whether these accounts are in harmony or in tension with one another. Finally, in the light of the entire text, indicate which account, or which parts of each account seem to give the most accurate picture of Socrates’ life
