• Suffering because of love. Two couples fall in love at first sight but they are afraid to tell each other the feelings they have for each other( p 9).
• Theme of jealousy. Manto who was the husband to be of Apsyrtos’ daughter becomes jelus of Habrocomes and takes revenge on him by falsely acusing Habrocomes of rape.this makes Habrocomes to be whipped and tourtured by Apsyrtos p(1 67).
• Theme of slavery and hardship. Anthia, Leucon, and Rhode are slaves to Moeris and Manto. The three were given to Moeris and Manto as presents on their wedding p.(176)
• There is motif of suffering indicated by travails involving pirates, fire and flood as predicted by the soothsayer. This showed that Habrocomes and Anthia would undergo a lot of suffering in their lives (p.15).
