Research questions:
1. How did the Kurds seek to establish a Kurdistan government?
2. What factors does the United Nations aim at achieving in creating a democratic Kurdistan?
3. What challenges did the United Nations face while seeking to relate with Iraq in solving the Kurdistan conflicts?
Proposed work
The literature review will provide reviews of research done on the topic explaining the UN diplomacy in Kurdistan since the year 2011. The aim is to show the role of the United Nations in developing international relations and bringing about changes for future developments and relations between countries (Baylis et al., 2013). First, the topic will discuss how Kurdistan seeks to establish a state that is independent and that which would bring about a better environment among the increasing population of the Kurds (Bugnacki, 2013). The issues of the Kurdistan’s humanitarian needs will be addressed to show the extent through which the United Nations is seeking to change the country and facilitate peace. An important aspect to consider is the use of weapons for mass destruction in Kurdistan (Chitalkar and Malone, 2013, p 3). This is an important aspect that promotes international security and reduces the degree to which the states use weapons to destroy other nations (Hough, 2014). The possibility of increasing risks involved in the use of weapons has an impact on the neighboring countries as there will be threats of weapons use especially among the Islamic Militants who migrate to Syria (Kaya, 2014, p 42).
In addition, it will be important to consider factors that promote the health of the Kurds in Iraq and establish means through which the population’s health status can be improved (Rawaf et al., 2014, p 189-191). This also promotes an environment favorable for the development of a nation that caters for the needs of all people especially the children, and deal with the fundamental issues that affect the children in Kurdistan (Zong-shan and Dadparvar, S. 2013, p 76). The diplomatic means were enhanced by the economic as well as political means that facilitate developments, and the United Nations has taken control over the last few years to bring about developments in Kurdistan (Amara, 2012, p 247). The political influences have resulted to other violent activities that affect the Kurds, and it is through this that groups such as the Kurdistan Workers Party get to create more conflict that may make it difficult for the United nations to get involved in the successful negotiations (Sezgin, 2012, p 170). The economic involvement includes the increased rate of investment that has resulted to increased trade (Muftuler-Bac, 2014, p 10-13) thus promoting the international relations and establishing a global environment that enhances engagement of Iraq with other countries. This may however be influenced by challenges that political barriers bring about, making it difficult for the country to get involved in the process of transformation (Whitman and Juncos, 2014, p 157).
According to Ilgit and Ozkececi-Taner (2013), alliances from the Kurdish government and other Middle East powers are increasingly becoming a threat to the western world, creating a challenge that would create a negative impact on the involvement of the Kurdistan government in the Security Council in the coming years. The relationship between Kurdistan and Iraq is associated with the challenges that result to problems that may affect the long-term success of the achievement of the Kurdistan objectives (Aras, 2011, p 594). This is an important aspect to consider in order in developing strategies needed to resolve the challenges. The cultures and way of living of the Kurds may influence the intervention process as a result of the differences that exist between the United Nations and the ideals that the Kurds develop on day to day basis. This may result to actions that are not in essence to the development of the Kurdistan to the international standards (Goldman, 2013, p 371).
The paper will also discuss the involvement of the media in enhancing diplomacy in Kurdistan through the United Nations. According to Sinclair Smets (2014, p 323-325), the Kurdistan media in Europe has been differentiated with the European media showing the differences that exist among the minority groups. This has in turn led to the development of policies that are restrictive in allowing for the expression of Kurds in a way that they consider effective. This will also have an influence on the relations that Kurdistan has established with other countries, and show the various means through which conflicts between Kurdistan and other countries such as Syria came into development with the aim of developing objectives needed to address the issue in the recent years (Elbakyan, 2014).
Methodology
The research methods to be used in this dissertation will be the utilization of both qualitative and quantitative data that will be established to determine the behavior of the Kurds in developing the Kurdistan government. The data will also be useful in finding out the effort that the United Nations has put in place to enhance diplomacy in Kurdistan Iraq. Questionnaires will be used for the study, and they will be structured in an open and close ended form to allow the researcher get concrete information on the topic. The quantitative data collected will be presented using frequency tables and figures, and this will allow the researcher come up with a conclusive report of what has been happening in Kurdistan, and how United Nations diplomacy has influenced behavior of the Kurds and the Kurdistan government. This will be the primary form of data collection that will help show the changes and trends of the Kurdistan. Secondary data analysis will be included in the study to allow for the researcher identify and relate the information attained from the study with that which other researchers have developed since 2011. This will require the researcher to make an analysis depending on the data attained and that which other researchers have come up with concerning the topic of discussion and issues affecting the negotiation process. Data will be analyzed, and the findings discussed, and a conclusion will be provided to show the United Nations’ Diplomacy in Kurdistan.
