Unit 3 IP Assignment – Intro to Operating Systems
Step 1 – Configure Remote Desktop on the remote computer
- Configuring on a Windows Vista and Windows 7 we enable the remote desktop by: Click Start button > Control panel > System and Security > System on the left pane, then click on Remote Settings. Then you select “Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure)”.
Allow the user to connect to the Remote Desktop by selecting Users then clicking the Add button, otherwise the administrator has access (Xtralogic, 2010). Enter the user name then click OK button.
Create a password protected account so as to access the Remote Desktop. Which is verified by clicking the Start button > control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety .User Accounts > Add or remove user accounts. Click on the user name and choose the Create Password option then follow the instructions.
- Configuring on a Windows XP, we enable the remote desktop by: clicking on Start button > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System then click Remote Settings on the left pane (Steven, 2002). Click on the Remote tab then select the “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer” then click OK.
Enable the user to connect to the Remote Desktop by granting them remote access by clicking on Select Users, otherwise the administrator has access.
Enter the User name then click the OK button.
Make sure the account is password protected: Click Start button > Control Panel > User accounts. Click on the user name then choose the Create Password option then follow the instructions. Make sure that the firewall’s “Don’t allow exceptions” option is not selected. Choose the Exceptions tab and choose the Remote Desktop check box.
Step 2 – Make sure the LAN IP address on the host computer does not change with time.
This step is optional; this prevents your computer through the DHCP server to give your computer a different IP address when the computer is restarted. Using a router will reserve an IP address when the computer is restart which is more reliant on the MAC address.
Step 3 – Connect Xtralogic RDC to the RDP server computer over LAN.
This step is meant to test the Remote Desktop configuration on the remote computer. The phone should be connected over the Wi-Fi to your LAN. For one to acquire the LAN IP address, select the Windows Logo key and R key then write ‘cmd’ then press Enter on the computer key board. Write ‘ipconfig’ then press Enter on the computer keyboard
Start the Xtralogic RDC on the phone.
Steps 4- From the router create port forwarding.
This step allows the computer on the local network to be accessible from the WAN. The port forwarding rule is created as follows:
[Protocol][WAN port] -> [LAN IP address]: [LAN port]
3389 is the default on the LAN port which is the TCP port; the WAN may have the same value.
TCP 3389 -> 192.168.1.250:3389
Step 5 – Connect to RDP server computer
This is done over the WAN using whatismyip.com service. One may enter new address or alter the present one by pressing for long the server list and choosing Edit. Write the WAN IP address.
Step 6 – Set up Dynamic DNS
This step is optional as it makes it possible to connect when you are far from home. The name will not change while the DDNS is present, additionally it will correct the IP address. An account is created using the DDNS provider like DynNS.com. Follow the steps and once you have the DNS name you use it instead of the IP address. When using a port number that is not default one is supposed to write it after the colon after the name.
