In a short but incisive essay address the following:
1. How does Jeremy Bentham go about reconciling the Ethical Hedonism he promotes with the Psychological Egoistic Hedonism he endorses? 2. How would Bentham and John Stuart Mill direct us to apply the principle of utility? Would they have us employ the hedonistic calculus in the same way? in some cases, might the differences in their views make us come to different moral decisions? Bentham’s characterization of sanctions, and the notion of a Natural Harmony of Interests and an Artificial Harmony of Interests should enter into your discussion of question 1. In your discussion of question 2 include two carefully worked out examples to illustrate the difference between act-utilitarianism and role-utilitarianism. Should quote both Mill and Bentham twice. |
