Assignment 2
(1) This paper is worth 100 points. Any late paper will lose 50%. YOU must, after you receive this assignment, violate a folkway [make sure you know the definition] that is not illegal or immoral (by your definition). Select some action or behavior that would be considered inappropriate for your age or position in society and perform that action. This MUST be something that will get reactions from a number of people. An example might be; wearing mismatched shoes, wearing formal attire at an informal gathering, eating with your hands (or maybe using only a spoon), speaking a made-up or foreign language to a sales clerk, talking to a stranger in an elevator (or stand at the front facing the crowd and laugh, stare, etc.), or invading someone’s personal space. This is something that should result in some mild sanction to you because other people’s reactions are critical. Record the reactions that you receive in detail by focusing on the following issues.
GRADING= 15% of your grade is based on English Composition components such as proper margins [1” on all sides] and font size as listed in the Modified ASA Guide provided for you in the Content Section of eLearn. Proper spelling and sentence construction and the other aspects of proper grammar based on your English Comp. courses will represent another 15% of your grade. Content represents the other 70% of your grade and the thoroughness of your answers to the questions below directly affects this portion of your grade. YOU MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF THREE FULL PAGES AND NO MORE THAN FOUR FULL PAGES! Your paper must be saved and uploaded in either a MS Word (DOC) or in a Rich Text Format (RTF) file format to be graded and counted as being turned in. You CAN NOT turn your paper in via e-mail! I do not open e-mail attachments from students. Do not use MS Works or Open Source. Turnitin does not read these and you will not receive a grade. If it is not in one of these two formats, it may be considered as not being completed! You must label your answers [A1, A2, C1a, etc.! Any paper turned in without labels will be considered as not completed.
YOU MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF THREE FULL PAGES AND NO MORE THAN FOUR FULL PAGES!!! Having less than three full pages will result in a 35 point penalty for each partial page. Be verycareful here. When I say 3 FULL pages, I am serious; this is not an arbitrary number and I do not mean 2.95 pages. I really do mean 3 full pages down to the bottom margin of the third page. The content portion of your grade is based on the completeness of your answers to the following questions.
Each major section (A, B, C, D) carries an equal weight of 25% of the content portion of your grade so please consider this when you are writing each section.
A) 1. Discuss what you did? 2. Why was it a violation of a folkway? 3. What values underlie the folkway you violated? Be detailed!
B) 1. Explain the seriousness of your violation? 2. How did the social control initially become evident? 3. Explain in detail the sanctions you received? Be detailed!
C) 1a. Explain how you felt about what you did prior to the action, [b] while you were doing it and [c] after you had time to reflect on your actions (be detailed)? 2. What does this tell you about the importance of folkways in society? 3. Has this particular folkway become more or less important to you? 4. Explain your answers in detail.
D) Discuss in detail what you learned from this assignment. What was the manifest function of the assignment? What was the latent function of the assignment? Many students leave off parts of this and lose points for it. Remember that each section carries equal weight and should carry equal weight in your paper.
