Students will write one 1200-1500 essay analyzing the historical aspects of a novel or auto- biography that takes place in the US within the time frame covered in this class from early history to the Civil War. You must not choose a history book.
1. The book has to take place in the US up to 1865, not anything after.
2. The book had to be written before 1865 as well, not anything after.
Paper question – What are the significant historical elements that caused and influenced the events and lives of the people portrayed in your book?
All books must be approved by the professor. People who turn this in late or not at all will have points deducted from their final paper grade.
The final word count must be at the end of the essay. Use Font size 12, times new roman, double spaced. This is an examination and analysis of the novel, but you can use material also from the textbook only. The focus of the paper must be on the novel, but you may use the textbook for historical context. Have an intro, a body, a conclusion. Have a thesis statement, and use the sources and your analysis to prove your point, your thesis. Students must use examples and citations from the books to formulate and defend their argument. Be sure to explain to your reader how evidence from the books supports your points. Use citations from the source to support your argument, but don’t go overboard. Excessive or large quotes are not acceptable. Find only that part of the quote that gets to your point and use that. Be sure to explain to your reader how your evidence supports your point. No cover page is needed.
Both in-text citations and the works cited page must be follow APA formatting.
Students must submit a copy on Blackboard as a Word attachment. Papers turned in after the due date will receive a substantial grading penalty. There will be no exceptions, unless approved by the instructor beforehand.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated; plagiarized papers will receive a zero and the student will receive a failing grade and the offense will be reported to campus authorities.
