In recent years, China has escalated its territorial claims to a small number of islands in the South China Sea. These islands have long been a source of friction between China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam but today they represent a new land grab. The islands are resource rich as well as provide a potential military outpost for China. The United States condemns China’s actions that are currently under review by the international Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
