Use the Reply button at the bottom of this page to post your responses to the two Discussion prompts for Week 1, each of which correspond to specific assignments in Module 1. You may post responses to the two prompts in one post or two. Whether you post once or twice, please copy and paste the prompt(s) at the top of each of your response(s). NOTE: You won’t be able to see your classmates’ posts until you have posted your own response.

Prompt #1: What Is Literature?
After watching the videos and reviewing all the relevant material in Module 1 on this topic, post two things:
A brief summary of your video notes [10 points], and
Your own definition of literature [5 points]. Your definition (at least one full sentence) will likely be a synthesis of some of the thoughts you’ve already had before this class along with ideas generated by the videos and material in Module 1. That’s great! Just make sure you use your own words.
Prompt #2: Diving In
After reading Chopin’s story and the relevant pages in Module 1, post two things:
1. An *analytic question [5 points]

Your question must be about the author (Chopin), cultural context or assumed reader of the story, “The Story of an Hour” (page 59 and HERE) (Links to an external site.). Refer to pages 1144-1150 in the textbook for ideas about generating analytic or critical questions. Also, bear in mind that analytic questions most often begin with the words “How” or “Why,” but “What” questions can also generate interesting analysis.

2. Either an explanation of or a full response to your question [10 points]

Your should explain thoughtfully what you regard to be the answer to your own question OR why you think the question you have formulated about the story would lead you or other contemporary readers to some interesting analysis. (At least one 3 – 5 sentence paragraph).

*Questions about the text of a literary work are another way into literary analysis which is a very common approach made popular by New Criticism throughout much of the 20th century. For this exercise, you must keep your focus on questions about the author, cultural context or reader.

NOTE: In the spirit of the title of this assignment (Diving In), I will view the posts in this thread as practice posts. What that means is I will give those of you who post early (three days before the posted deadline) feedback which you may use to edit what you posted.
