In the article, “Americans Get an ‘F’ in Religion,” by Cathy Lynn Grossman, Stephen Prothero indicates that Americans’ “deep ignorance” of their own religion and the religion of others is “dangerous.” Evidence of this ignorance is presented in the article as well as the perceived controversies as well as benefits of teaching religion—especially in public middle and high schools. Based on a thoughtful reading of the text and what you have learned over the course of the semester, analyze the evidence, arguments, and conclusions presented in the article by responding to the following questions. You may write one cohesive essay that addresses all five questions or answer all five questions individually.
Questions
1. What is the purpose of the article, and in what context (e.g. time period, background, circumstance) is it written? How does this context affect how you understand the content of the article?
2. Identify and discuss two pieces of evidence in the article that support the argument that Americans are ignorant about religion. What is sound or convincing about the conclusions drawn from this evidence, or what is problematic or unconvincing about the conclusions drawn from this evidence? You may argue both sides if you wish.
3. Given the 1963 Supreme Court decision, why are schools still “terrified” about teaching the Bible in schools? What is the difference between teaching the Bible as devotional reading versus teaching the Bible as literature?
4. What is one potential benefit and one potential drawback of teaching religion (in public schools and/or college)? What is required to teach religion effectively?
5. Assess the overall strength of the article. For example, are there important questions that are unasked or points that are unaddressed? Are multiple views and counterpoints presented? Does the author of the article appear biased? Do the arguments in the article directly follow from the facts?
