When to implement TQM?
Global competition has forced companies to be more customer focused, consumers want a high quality product to satisfy their need, most companies adopted TQM approach to their organizational structure and production, this philosophy means that this company isfocused on delivering continuous improvement and quality in production and delivery of product to the consumer. Total quality management is significant to organizational behavior and that it permeates every area of employee performance, a company that provides a high quality product every time must have every staff working towards the end result, employees must have the ability to respond to customer needs quickly in order to keep improving quality. For example, a toy company has adapted quality as a part of their overall culture, since total quality management is a change that always looks for ways to constantly strive for qualityimprovement, which would result in a big cost, there are three factors to be considered by the organization to see this change is needed:
1. Will the change make costumer response better overall?
2. Does the change make results faster for the organization and the customer?
3. Does the idea improve the use of the company’s resources?
If any of the above questions is answered with yes then the idea should be implemented to improve overall organizational and product quality, for instance if this toy company wanted to implement recyclable plastic for their toys:
1. Will the change make costumer response better overall?The answer is yes because customers will be happy to know that the toys they’re buying is recyclable and will not fill landfills
2. Does the change make results faster for the organization and the customer?Yes as the new plastic is easier to use and make toys
3. Does the idea improve the use of the company’s resources?The old plastic causes pollution and cause damage to landfills and plus it is actually cheaper to buy the environmentally safe materials in bulk
According to the basic requirement it looks as if this change in material will improve the quality of product and overall organizational quality
Cheaper material + environmentally safe = quality product
