1. Each of you read a late 19th/early 20th century literary work focusing on American cities (New York, Chicago etc). Using this reading as a baseline, choose one problem that faced the city described in the book you read. [The City Reader 5th ed, by Richard LeGates (2011)] Write an essay comparing the city at that time with a comparable situation in contemporary U. S. cities. Be specific about what connections there are, as well as where disparities in perspective might lie. Be sure to note what you are relying on for your discussion of the contemporary context for your issue.
2. Over the course of the last six decades urban America has experienced deindustrialization, decentralization, and de-urbanization as a result of national and international economic trends leading to a hollowing out of many American urban centers. How have older American cities responded to the challenges of deindustrialization, decentralization, and de-urbanization over the last decade or so? What innovative approaches are being used nationally, as well as how has the Twin Cities (Minneapolis) attempted to respond to the economic and social shifts? Make sure to comment on both national trends and local responses.
3. Urban uneven development (prosperity for some people and places, and not for others) is an issue that we have discussed in many different contexts throughout the semester. We have examined how this unevenness is seen in social contexts, economic development contexts, and the politic responses to this unevenness. Discuss this unevenness broadly. Why it occurs in metropolitan areas specifically, and how government both facilitates this uneven development and attempts to limit this unevenness from taking place. Give examples of this unevenness and discuss whether this unevenness hurts metropolitan areas.
