Service Learning experience
Service has different meaning depending on the nature of place where the services occur. In this case, we will define service as genuine actions of persons with an aim of helping others accomplish certain goals or aid the performance of the activities leading to the accomplishment of the goals. My learning experience concentrated on a charitable organization named Centro Mater. The organization operates through the help of the Miami archdiocese and offers services to children with ages ranging from about six weeks to twelve years. An important objective of the philanthropic organization is ensuring proper services to the society children.
The children from poor backgrounds offered with these services that help them grow socially. The services offered aid in creating better attitudes plus perspectives of looking at things. Being positive in life is an important aspect; therefore, the children develop qualities in terms of material, emotional plus intellectual traits. During my learning, I commenced with offering service to the children through giving of breakfast in the morning. Though I was shy in the process, it did not last by seeing them sing the emotion just went away.
When the teacher in charge of the children left for a while was responsible for taking care of the children. The teacher had a task of preparing the plans for the lessons of days ahead. I offered my service in planning the lessons. While in the organization, I felt that service meant dedication and hard work. One has to dedicate himself to activities that help others even if they do not get any material benefit from the people they are serving. This service aided my understanding on the behavior plus welfare of children and the meaning of service to helpless individuals.
There is a need for offering services to individuals in need of aid. As the poem by Robert Hayden suggests service means having love for other people. The love for people enables one to concentrate on their welfare and thus develops charitable feeling and actions. Love is driver to performing activities that aid the working and welfare of people. The poem depicts service by describing a person involving himself in hard activities in hush conditions so that he can help other people. The poem unravels the love he has when he wakes up in a cold morning, tired from the previous days work and still proceeds to perform other activities.
The author describes the man’s condition as “cold with fractured hands”. Depicting the dedications involved in offering services to those in need. The poems depicts service as dedicating oneself in activities that help other needy persons without wanting material benefits from the services that you offer. The nature of charitable work is a demonstration of one’s love plus care for the welfare of human kind. The poem description of service indicates the man in the poem as hard working and persevering. He dedicates himself to activities even on Sundays when most people rest from the stressful activities of the past week.
A person intending to offer services to individuals or organizations should be committed to his work. Commitment means having focused on the activity that one has decided to participate. It allows people to leave certain tasks for others even when there are no benefits. Service may sometimes involve suffering because once one is dedicated for the task he cannot quit in order to ensure the people in need get the services they require. Service aims at changing the life of people to a better one by offering aid be it emotional or physical.
