Los Angeles Police Department Gang Unit
Introduction
The Los Angeles police department gang unit is a division of specialized detective that is fully trained and acquired with appropriate skills to curb illegal activities in the central city state. The group consists of a number of trained detectives who patrol the city and investigates gang related activities in the neighboring places of the town such as bank robbery. They normally have a history of the various activities that the criminals have done in the past few years. Therefore, in case a crime is committed and the criminals escape, the detectives are able to investigate extensively into the matter and within no time, are able to apprehend the criminals who are responsible for the action.
Ways in Which the Los Angeles Police Gang Unit Reduces Crimes
The Los Angeles police department gang unit works in conjunction with the other related police units such as the Federal Bureau Investigation unit (FBI), the SWAT and the night patrolling officers. Together, these police defense units are able to stop the criminal activities and protect the ordinary people from threats because of the combination of the authority power which they are able to provide. The combination of these various forces of the investigation police makes it easier for tracking down of the criminals who would otherwise be a threat to the entire community (Finley, 2007). The criminals are stopped from carrying out illicit activities and apprehended after which they are brought to justice by being taken into prison for behavior rectification.
A criminal gang is a group of an individual who come together with the main intentions of breaking the law. The groups of people who make up a gang are extremely complex and dynamic in nature thus exceedingly hard for a normal person to understand it. The members of a gang vary according to the numbers of members. Gangs are of various categories depending on the number of members and the main intention that the gang carries out. Basing on these facts, gangs can be classified into three categories which includes; the street gang which is mostly located in the urban centers, prison gangs which are well based, use high technology and plan before launching an attack and lastly outlaw motorcycle gangs, which have along experience in the field of criminology and are well planned. They are based in both the local and national levels. However, the category of a gang does not actually matter, since the intensity of a gang depends on what it can do for the community.
Purpose of the Los Angeles Police Department Gang Unit
Basing on the facts about the gangs, the Los Angeles Police department gang unit increased its skills and technology in handling of criminal activities. More trained personnel were recruited by the department and more strict regulations were reinforced to combat the increase in criminal activities. Examples of criminal activities includes, bank robbery, rape, car hijacking and kidnapping, robbery with violence and computer hackers who use the knowledge to break into buildings (Katz & Webb, 2006). The Los Angeles police department gang unit is made up of several police forces that together they combine the available skills and knowledge about criminology to reduce the rate of crime in the city at large. Some of the key units that make up the Los Angeles gang unit include the weapon enforcement department, the criminal investigation department, street-level narcotics and other drugs enforcement, special unit and the intelligence service unit. Each of the above police unit has specified duties that it is required to carry out, though the combination of all of them makes it easier in the enhancing of maintaining law and order of Los Angeles state.
The weapon enforcement department which is part of the Los Angeles police department gang unit majorly deals with matters concerning the nation’s weapons. Its paramount duty is to make sure that the state weapons are not illegally owned misused by some members of the society. Some of the weapons that might be illegally owned by the Los Angeles citizen include gun ownership without police approval license, missile nuclear weapons, bombs and bullets. These weapons when they are illegally owned by members of the community increase the risk of in criminal activities. These weapons enforcement department also makes sure that other police forces do not misusing the power they have by killing the citizens without restrictions. Weapon department also makes sure that all the police departments are well equipped with the necessary tools and devices to fight gangs and terrorists in the society.
Another group that is part of the Los Angeles department is the criminal investigation group which its main function is to fight unlawful activities in the society. This is one of the sensitive aspects that are recently affecting the lives of the citizens of Los Angeles. For this reasons, the criminal activity has come up with new measures that are remarkably strict and more involving to the police to make sure that the society is protected from harm.
Some of the new measures are the increasing the number of the police patrolling the city both during the day and the night, addition of hours that the police work and also increase the investigation skills by making sure that the criminal police get monthly training about the cultures of criminals in Los Angeles. The criminals have also been reduced in the street of Los Angeles because the criminal gang police department has acquired more sophisticated devices that are able to detect and identify the exact criminal that participated in the law breaking activity (Kontos & Brotherton, 2008). The latest technological devices that the department uses include the finger print recognition devices that is connected to computers and identifies the person by use of the finger prints. The department has also installed cameras in the streets and buildings in the Los Angeles city to record any action that the criminals might be making in the absence of the police. The CCTV cameras are also useful especially at night and the rainy or the snow seasons that the police rarely patrol during the night.
The criminal investigation department section in some cases is forced to use spies to investigate a criminal group before taking any action concerning legal action on the criminals. The spies can be any immediate relatives to any member of the gang group who is trusted and any information about the group can be revealed to him or her in a simpler way. In unusually critical situations, the criminal investigation department group is forced to attach micro chips on the body of the spy to get the exact planning and information about the gang group. The micro chip recording devices are exceedingly minute but can save a lot of information that can be retrieved later by the use of computer. The unit can also install video analyzing micro chip on the objects that are commonly used by the criminals such as pens, clothes, shoes and cars that the criminals use regularly to trace and observe what the criminals are planning and how to track them down with ease (Watkins & Ashby, 2007). By using of such improvised technology, the criminal investigation police department is able to track down criminals, detain them and justice take against them.
Another department of the Los Angeles police gang unit is the Street-level narcotics and other drugs enforcement group. This police department is primarily notable in minimizing the amount of drugs in the city. The amount of drugs and the consumption have currently increased in Los Angeles. These drugs are mainly abused by the youths thus making them to participate in actions that are against the law. There are several types of drugs that are abused by the people of Los Angeles. A number of these drugs are imported from the neighboring nations such as Mexico targeting primarily the youth of Los Angeles who after ingestion of the drugs involve themselves in breaking of the law.
Although the youths are the key consumption of drugs in Los Angeles, they are not the ones who import and supply the drugs. They only buy drugs from reliable criminal groups that deliver them. Basing on these facts, the street level narcotics and drug police department which is a group of the Los Angeles police gang unit decided to track down the major suppliers of drugs in the city. This department uses trained sniffing dogs that are able to detect drugs such as Marijuana, cocaine and heroine that are majorly abused in Los Angeles (Watkins & Ashby, 2007). The department moves with dogs from one place to another with the main intentions of detecting the drugs and the citizens who use the drugs for illicit purposes.
Benefits of the Los Angeles Police Department Gang Unit
This police department together with the government decides to increase the charges that are taken against the citizens who are found using the illegal drugs. The penalty of the amount of money to be paid was increased and a new legislation introduced concerning the illegal use of drugs. Any member of Los Angeles who is found abusing the drug is sentenced for life imprisonment. This measures taken by both the government and the police department have been used to reduce drug consumption and trafficking in Los Angeles, which stimulates and increases criminal activities in the city.
The special intelligence service unit is an auxiliary group of the Los Angeles Police Gang Unit which is mostly called to undertake special mission either by the police unit department or the government department especially concerning the protection of the citizens in critical occasions such as in a bomb incident. This police gang unit group consists mostly of highly trained detectives who are well trained and have special skills and techniques in handling special problems that are a threat to the citizens. The detectives found in this category are well trained to overcome and endure the risk they undergo through in the process of rescuing and saving lives of Los Angeles citizens. The detectives use different equipments in tracking down criminals and apprehending law breakers. Some of these devices include cameras that are hidden, the audio spy devices, audio sound, amplifiers, and digital voice recorders. The police detectives use the combination of this device to either stop the criminals from continuing with their illegal activities or tracking them down and investigating more about the criminal groups.
Conclusion
The Los Angeles Police gang unit has taken several measures to combat the increase in the number of crime rates in the city. In combination with other police agency such as the SWAT, and the Federal Bureau Investigation, the Los Angeles police have managed to prevent crime from spreading in the city. The combination of these various forces of the investigation police makes it easier for tracking down of the criminals who would otherwise be a threat to the entire community. The criminals are stopped from carrying out the criminals activities and apprehended after which the criminals are brought to justice by being taken into prison for behavior rectification. The Los Angeles Police gang unit has also taken a initiative to educate the citizens on how they can avoid the criminals and the various ways they can identify a gang of criminals (Kinnear, 2009). This has helped the police department to stop the increase in criminal activities since the people can easy inform or conduct the police incase they see any incident of criminal activity.
