Objectives for Clinical Experience in the Pediatric Cardio Vascular Intensive Care Unit
It is the main of the key goal of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit rotations to ensure that students participate in diverse patient evaluation tasks. These experiences comprise of the following factors;
- The evaluation and management of pediatric patients who suffer from the common defects evident in critical care unit, for example, meningitis, asthma, sepsis and broncholitis
- When they observe and evaluate the characteristics of the patients, they extract blood samples through their venipuncture lines.
- Illustration of the knowledge to utilize equipments provided, procedures and the location of vascular access to ill children
- Evaluation of the peripheral insertion
- Preparation and issuing of the correct dosage of medicine
- Observation of the effects resulting from the intakes of drugs
- Correct usage and insertion of the nasogastric tubes
- The acquisition and interpretation of ECG rhythms
- The ability to assist in moving patients from one position to the other, for example, from bed to chair while involving them in daily activities
- Assistance in the issues concerning cardiac defects as instructed in the performance of the CPR, and pharmacological arrhythmia therapy.
- Analysis of the results concluded from laboratory tests and other tests aimed at patient management
Students should fulfill the objectives during the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit rotation. They entail of;
- Performance of patient assessments through their recent and past medical history, the assessment comprises of rapid evaluation of respiratory efforts, heart rate and the identification of IV tubes and hemodynamic monitoring
- Enlisting of a minimum of three patient evaluation records, for example the pathophysiology of diagnosis and a SOAP style report
- Observance of age reaction towards various illnesses and the responses to health care department
- Illustration of the appropriate age-specified form of approaches required to elicit and maintain the co-ordination of children.
- Discussion of the preceptor functions and shortcoming through appliances utilized in the care of children with exceptional health condition
- Demonstration of the appropriate approaches to maintain and control children co-ordination
