you are called upon analyze a global environmental event or issue of your choice.
The task is to write this paper as a policy briefing (that is, you’re advising a legislator, NGO, a community group or similar on how you suggest that they respond to the issue). The analytic essay relays to the reader ‘the facts’ as you interpret them and is structured in this way:
Introduction and presentation of argument
The introduction tells the reader what event or issue is, clearly defining the important aspect or aspects of it. The Introduction delimits (narrows the focus) and establishes a hypothesis (e.g. a event was a tragedy because b failed to do c in relation to the needs of d; or: e issue is of central concern to the people of f because g).
Analysis (‘body’)
The issue is developed as a problem (Who is doing what, to whom, for whose benefit?). The analysis progresses logically, is based on examples and reasoned argument, rather than being disjointed or relying on idealistic impressions and arguing from assertion.
Author’s response (‘discussion’)
The author’s response demonstrates critical understanding of the event or issue. It evaluates (‘makes a call’ about) the actions of those directly involved and reflects on the consequences of those actions, for those involved and for others. The response to the event or issue should be in evidence throughout the essay, not tacked on at the end.
Conclusion
The Conclusion is not merely a summary, it clearly and concisely explains the relationship between the analyzed event or issue and your interpretation of the consequences. The paper must include three to four external sources (peer-reviewed journal articles or books from commercial or university scholarly presses), but this will attract marks only if those sources are well-incorporated into the paper’s argument (i.e. not ‘tacked on’). |
