Read and analyze the “IST Timeline”

Watch this video on Youtube:

In this video, Henry Jenkins (Provost’s Professor of Communication, Journalism, Cinematic Arts and Education at USC Annenberg) talks about three important concepts (Convergence, Transmedia, and Participatory culture). Provide a definition for each of these concepts and discuss why they are relevant to (and important for) instructional technology. Use and cite other sources (look beyond Wikipedia and dictionaries). [Up to 25 points]
1. Convergence (of media/technologies and their uses/integration)
2. Transmedia (stories/messages/content across media)
3. Participatory culture (from consumers to producers, or “prosumers”)
2. Read and analyze the “IST Timeline” (http://www.indiana.edu/~idt/shortpapers/documents/ITduring20.html) with particular attention to the conclusion. We can see a common trend in the implementation of new technologies in education in the 20th century, from hype (excessive enthusiasm for a new technology), hope (envisioned potential of its application in education), and finally disappointment (when technologies fail to solve educational/learning problems). Why did it constantly happen in the 20th century? Will 21st century technologies have a different impact on education? Write your comments and reflections. [Up to 25 points]
4. Read the article on ubiquitous learning (u-learning). Write your reflections and comments connecting them to your experience. Provide at least one situated “real-world” idea to successfully implement ubiquitous learning. [Up to 50 points]
