1. Read Americanah by Adichie, looking for patterns of Nigerian constructions of “America” as expressed through a work of creative, artistic fiction. Objective: Students will read critically and analyze a work of fiction to tease out one possible African “offshore America.”
2. Choose one pattern of Nigerian “America” that you see repeated throughout the text to focus your Critical Analysis activity.
3. Write a formal, 2-3 page critical essay (approx 500-750 words) that describes, explains, and critically engages with the Nigerian “America” you have discovered. You should look for this pattern to be repeated throughout the novel, either explicitly or implicitly, and your finished essay should have a minimum of three (3) direct quotes or paraphrased passages cited in the body to demonstrate your mastery of the entire novel.
