Defining Adolescence

Defining Adolescence

Summary

Each person has to pass through adolescence since it is a stage from childhood to adulthood although it can be a very challenging stage. Adolescence is a stage of physical and psychological growth that begins from puberty to adulthood. Even though some adolescents may want to behave like adults because they think they have already become adults, the fact is that an adolescent is not an adult neither is he or she a child.  Adolescence stage mostly occurs between the ages of 13 and 19. However, the physical and mental changes may come earlier or later than expected. Most of the characteristics observed in adolescents are biological growth and development. Puberty is a stage of a young person’s life in which he or she sexually matures hence able to reproduce. Puberty is vital to the adolescence stage because when a child hits puberty he or she is considered as an adolescent. Since adolescents are not yet considered as adults, they are expected to spend most of their time in school which is ensured by the state laws that make education as compulsory to teenagers. This stage is considered by many individuals as a good stage but others tend to think that it is a stage of rebellion that allows for unconstructive things to be leant from peer groups.
