Assignment:
Briefly explain Hobbes’ doctrine of the state of nature. In what situations does he think such a state would arise and for what reasons? Also, explain the first three laws of nature and how, according to Hobbes, we successfully get out of the state of nature and create the conditions for justice and morality. Lastly, Hobbes says that ‘justice’ and ‘morality’ only come into existence when a social covenant is created: they have no natural existence or authority. Do you agree with this perspective? Why or why not? Explain.
General Instructions for Response Papers
Students are expected to write clearly and concisely. The goal is for students to demonstrate their understanding of a particular subject covered in the readings and course material.
It is also recommended that students utilize the discussion board. Paper topics will usually relate to questions on the discussion board. Students are encouraged to expand on the topics covered on the discussion board, along with the course material.
Students do not need to use any sources other than their textbook to complete this assignment. If a student does use sources other than their textbook (for example, websites or articles), they need to include a thorough list of sources at the end of their paper. When quoting from the course textbook make sure to specify the page number where the quotation can be found. A simple reference at the end of the quotation will suffice, such as: (p. 42) or (42).
