ENG3173 Clinical Rehabilitation
Prosthetic limbs are widely used for the amputee rehabilitation. With increased demands of improving the quality of life for the prosthetic limb users, methods of attaching a prosthetic limb have become very important for the successful amputee rehabilitation. With support of the latest technologies and clinical techniques, there are different type of methods available for the prosthetic limb attachment.
This coursework requires you to write a report regarding the available prosthetic lower limb attachment methods for the above knee amputee rehabilitation and further development could be carried out to improve the attachment methods from the viewpoint of the clinical feasibility and complications, the mechanical and materials, the electronic and sensor technologies.
The structure of the report
The report should have following sections: Introduction, Literature review, Discussion and Conclusion. The introduction should state that the objectives of the report and contents of the report briefly.
The literature review [Note 1] should cover currently available prosthetic limb attachment methods for the above knee amputees and state of the art technologies supporting the prosthetic limb attachment method.
Based on the literature review, the discussion section should firstly highlight the different attachment methods used for the above knee amputees under the different clinical situations. Then, the discussion should address the advantages and limitations of each method used for the prosthetic limb attachment. The discussion should cover the following technologies and issues (wherever it is applicable).
1. Biomechanics
2. Materials
3. Electronics and sensors
4. Clinical situations of the amputees
With support of the above discussions, the conclusion of the report should focus on the future challenges of each attachment method.
Other requirements of the report
• Text format of the report:
1. Figures and Tables used by the report should be properly referred.
2. Language: spelling (British English)/grammar – concise & technical – terminology relevant to implant, bone properties and bone remodelling.
3. Layout: clear, good use of headings, a logical structure, use of diagrams, within length limit.

5. Evidence of extra reading beyond the lecture notes and contents delivered in the class.
6. Text must be in:
11 or 12 point font size.
Times New Roman font type.
Line spacing should be 1.5 lines.
Margins should be 20mm.
A maximum of 10 A4 pages (including References, Tables and Figures) is allowed.
Report must be written using MS word and using the 3rd person format.
• References: Sources such as books, journals or websites may be used, but the text should be in your own words. Use of external sources must be referenced.
• Mark: This coursework counts 15% of assessment of the module
• Introduction 1%
• Literature review 4%
• Discussion 5%
• Conclusion 2
• Report structure, presentation and references 3%
• Submission deadline: 4pm on Tuesday week 11 semester 2 (2015). An electronic copy must be submitted on SurreyLearn via Assignment (Prosthetics assignment) before the deadline. Only one file is can be submitted for this coursework. Resubmission is possible before the deadline, but the previous submission will be deleted automatically by the system.
• Penalty: Marks will be deducted for late submissions with no confirmed extenuating circumstances based on the university regulations.
