Describe what you think is the most important event in American History between 1492 and 1877 from what’s learned in class.

Use either of the event: May-September 1787 The Philadelphia Convention OR Battle of Antietam. Choose only ONE event, then, imagine you are preparing a lecture about that event, and write a paper that does these four things:Part I: Identify the event you have chosen, and discuss what you will talk about in your lecture, and what elements of the event you will focus upon.

Part II: Discuss, in depth, why you have concluded that this is the most important event of the period.Your justification should include some discussion of broader themes in American history, and how your event fits in with those themes.

Part III: Identify two or three primary documents that you will assign to students to help them better understand the event you have chosen. Explain, in depth, why you have chosen those documents.

Part IV: Conclude your lecture with some discussion of how your event is memorialized or remembered by Americans today. Discuss what you will say in the concluding portion of your lecture. Feel free to include some exhibits—pictures you might use, or films, or songs, or whatever. Note: Part I should be about 25% of your paper. Please do not spend five pages summarizing your event, and one page dealing with Parts II through IV. Note: This paper should argue that the event you choose is the MOST important event. Not to prove it is one of the most important event, but to persuasive it is THE MOST important event. Parenthetical citations. Examples:

Abraham Lincoln said, “A house divided cannot stand.” (www.whitehouse.gov/speeches.html)
