Discuss the dialectics of flows and friction, connection and disconnection, and mobility and immobility in terms of the various “globalscapes” covered in lectures. Your essay must engage with at least two of the following case studies: Bollywood film in Nigeria, deported Salvadoran immigrant youth, and the used clothing trade in Zambia.
Your analysis should draw upon some of the key concepts discussed in lecture, such as: Time-space compression, the politics of simultaneity, the disjuncture between space and identity, deterritorizalization and reterritorialization, globalization and nationalism, cultural imperialism and indigenization, ethnoscapes, mediascapes, commodityscapes, and securityscapes, parallel and alternative modernities. What are the particular historical and political contexts in which these global processes are embedded?
