Paper Requirements:
* You are to write a 1100 word rhetorical analysis of a photograph/s that you have selected. You will have to select a photograph or two that has had some research done about it, as this assignment requires secondary sources.
*Should include 2- 3 secondary sources
*Should include photo/s in your essay (no more than two)
*Double-spaced
*One-inch margins
*12 pt. standard font—Times New Roman
*MLA Formatting (See our text or Purdue Owl).

Purpose
Based on what you have read in the textbook and what we have discussed in class about rhetoric and the rhetorical appeals or artistic proofs (ethos, pathos, logos), this assignment asks you to think about how and why a particular visual/photograph works (or doesn’t work) rhetorically.

Guidelines/Rubric
In addition to being well written and organized, the most successful responses to this assignment will do the following (these are not listed in order):
• Describe various key components for analyzing a visual as outlined on page 628-629 in our St. Martin’s Guide to Writing text. These include composition, people, scene, words and tone.
• Describe various contextual components surrounding the visual as outlined on page 629 of our St. Martin’s Guide to Writing text. These include rhetorical, social, historical and interxtuality.
• Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of how the artistic proofs (rhetorical appeals) are working in the photograph.
• Include a clear and precise thesis statement.
• Explain and analyze how the author builds and presents his/her message/argument.
• Explain and analyze how the author connects with (or fails to connect with) the original audience.

Your audience for this assignment is your classmates and me.

Due Date
• The first draft of your paper is due on Friday, 3/13. Please bring two printed copies to class with you and submit a copy to Moodle.
• The final draft is due on Wednesday, 4/1. Please bring one printed copy to class and submit a copy to Moodle.

You will receive comments from one classmate on this draft, and from me, if you sign up for a conference. You will use these comments to revise your paper. If you do not receive comments from me, I strongly urge you to make an appointment with the writing center for feedback. There will be a conference sign-up sheet posted on my office door (Allen #322) toward the end of the semester with a subsequent deadline.
