Assignment Three:  The Formal Report/Scholarly Article

Directions

Using the technical topic you selected in the Assignment One Feasibility Report and explored in the Assignment Two Progress Report, craft a formal report that includes a minimum 2100-word body (sometimes called the scholarly articleportion of a report). The word count applies only to the body of your report that starts with the Introductionand ends with the Recommendation. (In other words, you cannot count any of the words in the Front Matter or the Back Matter.)

You will craft a persuasive/argumentative article that poses solutions to the issue under discussion.

You must have a minimum of eightsecondary sources in your paper:

  • Fouracademic/scholarly sources
  • One—at a minimum—of the academic/scholarly sources must be from a current (within the past five years) peer-reviewed scholarly journal.
  • Four popular/credible sources (most newspapers and magazines would fall into this category)
  • Four of your eight sources must be accessed through the EdCC library databases.

The above are the minimum requirements. You can get all your sources from the EdCC Library databases if you like. Also, some students use only academic/scholarly sources and skip the popular sources—I’m fine with that.

The completed formal report must contain the following elements in the following order:

Front Matter

____    Title page

____    Abstract

____    Table of contents

____    List of figures (if applicable: you must use at least one table or figure in this report)

____    List of tables (if applicable)

____    List of abbreviations or symbols (you must include either this list or a glossary at the end)

Body

____    Scholarly Article: A third-person narrated text with headings/subtitles that includes the following:

____    An introduction that includes a thesis and explanation of the

report’s purpose

____    A discussion of the topic’s background in a way relevant to the

scope of your research and article’s focus.

____    A discussion of the methodologies people use/d to begin to

measure the topic’s issue or to discover the topic’s

existence/feasibility

____    A definition/discussion of the issue(s) that your recommendations

will seek to remedy

____    A discussion of the findings and conclusions regarding the impact

the issue(s) has/have upon an industry and/or overall society

____    An explicit discussion of the feasible recommendation(s) people

must consider as they try to determine ways to remedy the topic’s

issue(s)

Back Matter

____    Works Cited

            ____    Appendices

____ Appendix A is Flesch Kincaid reading level and passive sentence percentage

____ Appendix B is your biography (can be current or reflect your goals—funny is okay)

____    Glossary (see note under Front Matter above)
