Writing a proposal for your research paper

The following will help you create a proposal for your research paper. The length of your proposal should be at minimum 1 to ½  page in length and can also vary depending on your topic. It should give a background of your topic and should identify your particular focus. It should also include information on – at least 3 authors and texts or other sources (references/secondary sources) that will be the foundation of your paper, and present several questions that may direct your research. Your references/internet sources should be attached to your proposal.

Here are some basic guidelines for what to include in your proposal:

Topic

  1. Begin by brainstorming ideas that have intrigued you based on some of the topics. You cannot write a proposal without researching a topic.

  2. Choose a topic ( Your topic can serve as the title of your proposal)

  3. Give a brief definition, explanation and/or description of the topic.

History of the Topic

     4. Provide a brief history of your topic

     5. Describe the relevance of this history to (certain)people today.

Issue

     6. Tell what issues your paper will explore. (What is the problem?)

     7. Explore why this issue is important to your personally (experiences, observations etc.)

     8. Express your position on the topic. ( What is your point of view?)What will your paper seek to convince your reader of or propel your reader to do? (What can be done about this problem?)

Audience

     9. Identify your audience.

     10. Tell why your paper is important to or will interest thus audience.

Research Paper Guidelines

Your research paper stem from the foundation text by Toni Cade Bambara’s short story, The Lesson. Some of the major themes we have explored are the importance of hard work, education and success within minority communities, socioeconomic status and identity, Moreover, we have also looked at other themed such as Women and Identify in the American Culture, the struggle for the American dreams within minority communities – just to name a few. Working with two additional texts, explore one of the similar overlapping themes that are evidence. One text you need to find and research it by yourself , another text your choose one of it,The Myth of the Latin Women: I Just Met a Girl Named Marie by Judith Ortiz Cofer or Digging by Andre Dubus. Your are required to do an in-depth analysis and discussion of an issue or problem surrounding this theme. Your essay should be a minimum 6 – 6 ½  page in length.

Additional Instructions

Working with your paper, be sure to integrate all three of your texts ( in your case – the extra 2) in your introduction. Give a minor background on each. Be sure your thesis is intact – you may have to tweak it somewhat based on the integration of new materials, however the goal is to make sure it is closely in alignment with what t=your already have. This will allow for a less strenuous development.

Make sure your topic sentence sentences are in tacked and any additional topic discussion should be part of your introduction thesis.

Remember that a citation without page number is considered incomplete and can affect your paper.
