Scenario
A 400-bed hospital has announced it will begin a multi-year project to implement electronic health records. The process is being defined and mapped out in an institutional information technology master plan. As the health information manager, you are participating in this process. Your topic is electronic health records. You will be presenting this information to the hospital’s executive team and department directors. They have asked for 2 page memo outlining your recommendations on the following questions.
• What hospital systems should be considered for automation?
• What HIM systems can be automated?
• What are the issues and barriers to be addressed in the development of the EHR?
• What will be the role of the HIM department in the development of the EHR?
• What types committee(s) do you recommend be developed to work on the process, what departments should be represented on the committee(s) and what is their role?
You will be graded on the content of the memo as well as your ability to meet the guidelines outlined in the additional instructions (provided below).
