Film reflection
The film is a documentary about the lives of Chinese people and various aspects that affect it such as the economy. This discussion is based on the film, “The People’s Republic of Capitalism Part 1”.
Through the movie, I have learnt that China is also faced with problems or challenges of exploitations. The few individuals that own the means of production are exploiting the many people who work in the industries. They earn low wages. I have also learnt about the challenge of unemployment in China.
Comparative advantage refers to the ability of a party of a country to produce particular goods or services at a lower cost compared to another country. According to this film, the comparative advantage of China is in the manufacturing industry. It has enough industries that produce various products at lower cost compared to other products.
Wal-Mart is one of the companies performing well globally. The role of Wal-Mart in globalization can be described as both positive and negative. Positive in the sense that, it employs people and sells its products at competitive prices compared to other stores. It is negative because, it does not promote local people; as it does not sell services from local industries as well do not provide job opportunities to local job seekers. It can be also viewed to represent complicated forces of globalization because of the challenges it receives in foreign countries such as failure to provide products that suits the local customers.
Because I am an international student from China and have experienced some of the depictions in the movie, it is fair representation of China. Many of the people in China, running to millions are living in poverty as few continue to enjoy. There are instances of corruption and greed that have contributed to poor living standards of many Chinese.
